But that itself is a trap, for Azog wants to lure then over there as a second Orc army lies in wait. Thorin decides that the only way to save the day is to ride up to Azog’s command post and take him one on one. Thorin eventually overcomes his insanity, goes back to the others and rallies them for battle. All companies then form an alliance and fight together to defeat the Orcs. Their differences are however somewhat laid aside when the Orcs appear. But then, Thorin gets reinforcements from his allies, commanded by Dain Ironfoot II, who confronts the Elves. But Thorin is far beyond any compromise and the word gets back to Thranduil, who orders his army to finish the Dwarves. Bard asks him to honour his word and commitment. Thranduil sends Bard to parley with Thorin. Now, Thranduil’s men and Thorin’s Dwarves are on a collision course. They will not only steal the gold (but obviously) but also grab the Arkenstone. Unknown to Thranduil, who has gathered his army of Elves outside Smaug’s lair, as he needs a piece of jewellery from the treasure hoard and is ready to kill Thorin for it, there is a huge army of Orcs led by Azog set on getting inside the castle. Gandalf asks Galadriel to come with him, but she is too exhausted by the effort it took to drive away Sauron, who tries to tempt her away from righteousness. Gandalf also manages to escape, thanks to the combined efforts of Galadriel, Saruman (surprisingly) and Elrond.
